A Note of Caution and Something to Think About

Last week we were in an RV park in Redding, CA and were alarmed at the police (Sheriff actually) presence there. In the space of less than 2 hours there were 3 visits by them including an unmarked detectives unit. On our departure we asked the attendant what was occurring. She stated that the Sheriffs’ dept periodically made sweeps contacting those on parole, Megan's law registrants, as well as for "other" reasons. It appears there is increasing numbers of those types of persons moving into RV camps where the monthly rent is relatively low and there are no background checks (i.e. credit checks etc). Has anyone else noted this? We had noted upon entering that there were particularly large numbers of rigs that had been there an extended time. Many were "older" and in need of upkeep. We left the next morning and will not return there. Bill and Carole

RE: Avoiding California Sales and Use Taxes – How to do it

We live in the State of California and Pay Taxes in California because we want to maintain a lifestyle. Some feel paying taxes in the State you reside is somehow unethical. But it is legal to do the above....I think. We have nearly $8000 in state, federal, property, and sales taxes due by April 15. Were not poor, but we are retired and as most, have a limited income. If the taxes keep going up, we are going to respond by voting with our feet. We are mobile, and the great state of Taxifornia had better wake up to the fact that an increasingly small group of us is paying for what a whole lot of others are getting. I paid my dues thru 2 wars and a whole lot of misery and more that is still with me. We worked hard, saved, invested wisely and now when its time to enjoy the benefits of what we have done we find that we are increasingly being asked to pay for what others have NOT done. Its the proverbial grasshopper and the ant tale played out in real life. Bill and Carole

Avoiding California Sales and Use Taxes – How to do it

1. Purchase RV (we bought ours in Oregon) DO NOT GO TO DMV until the following are in your possession!!! 2. Make sure you get a form BOE 448 (rev3) (9-04) (Statement of Delivery outside of California), signed and notarized. 3. Receipt of Purchase 4. 10 day use permit 5. Go to DOE office a. Fill out a request for exemption from the Sales/Use Tax listing that the RV is intended for use primarily outside CA. b. Request form BOE 111 rev 8(Yellow half sheet) c. Also get accompanying letter w/instructions (BOE 111-A90 (S1)(1-05) d. Be prepared for ignorance of the law (Their manuals had not been updated and we had to raise a fuss.) It took us TWO DAYS. Go to DMV 1. Take RV with you to have serial number verified. 2. Present both BOE 111’s and 3. Out of state registration (IMPORTANT) 4. Check for Registration Fee’s 5. Copy of Purchase Receipt (an original is fine – they should give it back to you) Be well aware that you MUST document and keep the RV out of state for 91 of the next 180 days. Lots of documentation is necessary and it must be consistent Good Luck Bill and Carole

Winegard Satellite Finder

Do anyone know how to check to see if the model SF1000 is working properly? We can't get it to lock on to the satellite's signal consistently, and the sound often goes up and down even when we are not moving the satellite antenna. Thanks Bill

RE: Motorola V3 and USB Data Cable

Hi Dave, We will check out Ebay. However we are hesitant @ installing any software that is not shrink-wrapped by the manufacture. We don't need any more cables (we stopped looking after 7) after we determined that all the cables acted the same with the phones. We also downloaded the AT&T data set which at least gave us the charging function. The rest of the software was useless as we use a Verizon USB modem. The installation was also VERY slow and tedious for on a 30 meg application. thanks again Bill

Motorola V3 and USB Data Cable

Hi Everyone I am not sure if this has been discussed before but I thought I would share it and hopefully avoid someone else the hassle we have gone through. Earlier this week, we purchased 2 Motorola Razor V3 phones from AT&T. These are for voice as we use a Verizon USB 720 and Cradlepoint router for data. We also purchased a Motorola USB data/power cord so that we could transfer phone books and charge the phones from our laptops. The cable came with no software but the rep told us that we could "download" the drivers. After spending 40 minutes with AT&T tech, and another 20 minutes with Motorla customer serviced/tech (not to mention a trip the the AT&T store)we found that the $20 cable requires software/drivers that cost $35 EXTRA. The cable goes back tomorrow. Regards Bill

RE: 4x4 vs. 4x2

This is hard to explain. In turns the wheels turn at different speeds. Not a problem in independent wheels on the front on 4x2's. The drive wheels on 4x2's have a differential to allow for the different ratios in turns. Positraction differentials have a locking mechanism to keep the turning ratios the same on both wheels, even in turns. 4x4's do not normally come with this unless you specifically ask for it. This is why trucks with positraction sometimes do much better in difficult situations. The 4x4's loose traction in turns with the two less powerful wheels spinning. Hope this helps. Bill

RE: 4x4 vs. 4x2

A thought to ponder on this subject is a bit of information that most folks don't know. This is you need both a positraction differential and 4 wheel drive. The reason is that in turns your 4x4 becomes a 1x1 without it. With a locking differential you have 2x1. You don't get positive wheel traction in turns on the front of a 4x4 as none are made the locking in the front. Found this out two trucks ago when I noticed that some 4x4's came with locking differentials and some didn't. Took quite a few tech guys to finally get the answer.

RE: New Tank/Toolbox combo (+ photos)- I like it!

The weight of diesel varies with the temperature. The colder the heavier, and the more fuel you can get in the tank. But beware of warming. Watched it literally pour out of jet fuel tanks when fueled at night (50's f) and it reached up into the 100's at Travis AFB when planes were delayed during the summer. The specific gravity can go from right around 6 to almost 7 lbs per gallon. That's almost 16% rate of expansion. Bill

RE: Komfort 241fs Pricing

We checked the Nada Guide and unfortunately it does not mention the 241fs. The closest it came was the 221fs which is a different floor plan. This at least gives us an close idea. Thanks Bill

RE: Anyone tried to cancel Dish?

I have reviewed all the posts in this forum. The general gist of things is that both satellite companies have very poor customer service and a VERY narrow idea of long term commitment thru customer service. Moving between them and understanding the rules there of seems to be the best strategy. Neither seems to be interested in generating customer loyalty long term. Direct TV has certainly "irritated" us. Dish has done so to others. We have been loyal customers to those who deserve our loyalty. This group has done nothing but generate the feeling that they are "pirates", taking what ever they can get at the moment. Bill

RE: Anyone tried to cancel Dish?

I cancelled Dish. They did make me take my own equipment down. The reason I cancelled was they wouldn't upgrade our receiver. Their loss, Direct TV always upgrades with no problem. They would upgrade us. They just wanted $100 to do it. Got a much better deal by moving to Dish. Bill

RE: Anyone tried to cancel Dish?

Direct TV is worse!!! We recently cancelled our account after 18 months and they charged us a $87 cancellation fee because we had HD. We had been told it was a 1 year commitment. yep, it was there in the small print. Then to make matters worse, when they asked for their equipment back, and we sent it to them. Then they wanted a 4th receiver that we had not purchased from them but off ebay. We paid only $30 for the dammed thing but they were going to charge us $160 if we didn't give it to them. Still have not returned it, and wondering if this is all legal. Regards Bill

Komfort 241fs Pricing

Were looking for a 2K8 Komfort 241fs. We have seen prices ranging from $45K to $36K. Can anyone give what we should have to spend? Our nearest dealer is over 70 miles away so we figure we are going to have to be mobile in the regards to purchase. Fortunately we are retired. We have more time than funds. Thanks Bill
